Josh Lowe is an artist and musician based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington, New Zealand. They work in the field of sound art through physical installation.
Their work explores the usage of sound to create imagined environments. Dreams, visions, and spaces in between. Using industrial objects with acoustic properties to produce noise, they aim to demonstrate how musical performance may be arranged and perceived in unfamiliar ways. They evoke visual themes of discordance; juxtaposing musical instrumentation with raw material. An unfamiliar marriage of objects that allow us to engage with our understanding of musical performance differently.
They graduated with a bachelor of commercial music, majoring in music technology from Massey University in Wellington in 2024. Their work has been shown in Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington, Tamaki Makaurau/Auckland, and Te Papa-i-Oea/Palmerston North.
They also perform as a DJ under the name elastic coitus, specialising in curating high energy club music. they incorporate elements of UK hardcore, industrial techno, pop deep-cuts, and left field club into their performances.
They have performed headlining shows at the Wellington City Gallery and Flux in Otautahi / Christchurch. they have also performed at Wellington’s Cuba Dupa festival and with event collectives including THIRD PARTY, Practice, MESH, 909 Tekno, TGF, Club Unique, and WAY.PNT.
